The recent 'Water Works campaign' raises an issue of vital importance.

Globally, an estimated 2.5 billion people still live without effective sanitation and the Department for International Development estimate that this causes over 2 million avoidable deaths each year.
Labour agree that we need to do more to prevent these avoidable deaths and tackling water supply and sanitation problems is a key element of this.

We recognise the Government’s commitment to provide clean water to an additional 15 million people and improved access to sanitation to an extra 25m in the developing world.

It is important that the Government shows the same international leadership the last Labour Government did pushing international development issues such as water supply and sanitation to the top of the international political agenda, including at the High Level Meeting of the Sanitation and Water for All partnership on 20 April 2012 and the meeting of the World Bank next Spring.
