Reaction to the football governance debate has been overwhelming

After a busy week which was dominated by metal theft and royalty, a small speech on Thursday captured all the attention.

The government has indicated it will legislate if necessary on foreign ownership of football clubs. Three areas are of particular concern. Governance, direct supporter involvement and fit and proper persons test.

Thursdays long scheduled three hour Select Committee debate at which the minister was present drew in MP's from many a troubled club. Coventry, Wimbledon, Liverpool, Fulham/QPR/Chelsea, old Middlesbrough and Portsmouth. The select committee have just produced a report on the way forward.

One of the key issues for the Government and I presume why the minister welcomed the debate was the Premier League's late submission to the consulation. The minister has been pressed to state the 29th February is the absolute last date for a their submission with a view toward accepting a voluntary scheme of governance. A clearly a problem for the FAPL.

Many MP's had taken the opportunity to go home with the recess week next week. I had had this debate pencilled in for a while and it would have been remiss not to add to the discussion about the unique set of issues at Blackburn.

With that I mind I delivered a speech mainly around the facts and comments of people in a far wiser position than me on the governance arrangements and how they were seeming to impact negatively.

I sympathise with other supporters who have been fed a diet of nepotistic commentary. It's impossible for them to understand.
