I was recently written to by the Electrical Safety Council and the Electrical Contractors Association regarding the launch of the Electrical Safety Register.
The register, which is available at www.electricalsafetyregister.com lists over 36,000 contractors, to help homeowners find a safe electrician in their area. All of the companies on the Electrical Safety Register have been fully assessed to rigorous technical standards, and the ESC and ECA claim this makes it the definitive searchable database for competent electricians.
Phil Buckle, director general of the ESC, said: “The launch of the Electrical Safety Register is a huge step forward for homeowners and will greatly help them in their search for a certified local contractor.
“With 80 per cent of electrical work carried out by electricians who are registered with NICEIC or ELECSA, combining them into one central database made perfect sense.”
Electrical safety is an issue that I think has largely been overlooked by those campaigning on health and safety in housing – particularly in the private rented sector. I would like to see greater enforcement of electrical safety standards in the UK, through the creation of a required electrical safety certificate for properties being rented.
