FW: Analysis of UK Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space sectors and the EU

Dear Graham,

This morning ADS and KPMG have published an analysis of how the UK’s membership of the EU impacts the UK’s Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space sectors.

ADS is the national trade association for the UK’s Aerospace, Defence, Security and Space sectors. We have 900 members, including 850 SMEs, across all regions and nations of the UK. In 2014 our sectors generated £56bn in output, including £31bn in exports. Combined they directly employ 310,000 people, supporting a total of 800,000 jobs across the UK economy.

With 90% of our members exporting to the EU, the outcome of the forthcoming EU referendum matters to ADS members.

The KPMG analysis shows benefits of the UK’s membership of the EU to these sectors include free trade within the EU, access to EU R&D funding and influence in setting EU and global regulations.

A survey of ADS members also found that 86% believe it would be better for their business if the UK remained in the EU.

Support for membership of the EU from these sectors was widespread and uniform across the size of company and company ownership. Only 2% believe it would be better for their business if the UK left the EU.

Although the report does not call for specific reforms as part of the UK’s on-going negotiations, ADS members are not uncritical of the UK’s membership of the EU. The assessment, therefore, also includes a call for the UK to maximise the value of EU membership for the benefit of British businesses.

Best wishes,
Paul
