FW: Supporting the UK's Museums

Dear Graham ,

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on your recent success in the general election, and to provide you with some information on the work of the Museums Association.

The Museums Association is the oldest museum membership organisation in the world, representing over 500 museums and 7,000 individuals who work in the sector. As the main voice of museums across the four nations of the UK, we are greatly looking forward to working with you over the next five years to ensure that museums continue to be vibrant institutions with an important role to play in our society.

The UK has over 3,000 museums providing a wide range of public benefits, including education and research, economic value, the creation of cultural and scientific knowledge, and as guardians of the country’s heritage and collections. Museums also contribute to our wellbeing, create better places to live and help us to understand the world we live in. Our research shows that museums are highly trusted and valued by the public.

Please find attached a copy of the Museums Association’s ‘Museums Change Lives’ policy document, which shows how this dynamic sector is adapting to new ways of working and can help to deliver public policy goals far beyond the traditional remit of the museum, including in areas such as health and wellbeing, education and social policy.

Museums of all types and sizes have worked hard to diversify funding streams and adopt new business models over the past five years. However our research shows that many museums are finding it increasingly difficult to deliver a full service to the public and we believe that it is vitally important that the UK’s museums and cultural heritage remain at the heart of our communities. We would welcome the opportunity to work with you to support the country’s museums over the next five years.

If you would like to find out more about the work of the Museums Association and your local museums or would like us to facilitate a visit, please get in touch.

I wish you all the best for the coming five years.

Yours sincerely,

Sharon Heal
