April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month
April is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. It is our annual opportunity to raise awareness of bowel cancer - the UK’s second biggest cancer killer.
This Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, to mark the 10 year anniversary of the Bowel Cancer Screening Programme, we will be encouraging everyone of screening age (60+) to take the screening test when they receive it in the post.
Screening is the best way to detect bowel cancer early, when there is the best chance of survival. Nearly everyone will survive if bowel cancer is diagnosed in the earliest stage of the disease. So it is vital that we get the message out during Bowel Cancer Awareness Month that taking the screening test is easy and could save your life.
The average bowel cancer screening uptake in England is 58 per cent. However there is huge variation across the country. Some areas have a 68 per cent uptake, yet others are as low as 33 per cent. We also know that uptake is particularly low in areas where there is high deprivation and in some ethnic minority communities. So raising awareness of taking the screening test is important.
I have attached a handy spreadsheet, which includes uptake rates for all Clinical Commissioning Groups in England, including yours. You can compare the uptake in your CCG to others and to the England average. If you need help finding your CCG please don’t hesitate to get in touch and we will be happy to assist.
You can show your support for Bowel Cancer Awareness Month by:
· Promoting Bowel Cancer Awareness Month in your local media. I have attached a template press release for you to disseminate
· Using your social media accounts to raise awareness of bowel cancer and screening. Print out the attached poster and post a photo of yourself holding it on your Twitter and Facebook. Here are some suggested tweets: @Bowel_Cancer_UK
We hope you will join us and support Bowel Cancer Awareness Month. Together we can stop bowel cancer.
